The curve is a mathematical approximation, not a measurement.

The estimate uses a simplified Widmark model, approximately 45-minute absorption and decay of a common level of 0.15‰ per hour. Individual absorption and metabolism may vary significantly. Do not use the result to decide whether you can drive. When in doubt, don't drive.

Alcohol in beverages

How long does alcohol take to break down?

Compare common servings and amounts of pure ethanol. This module illustrates the conversion at 8 g/h, not the individual sobering time.

2,5 hod.Large beer · 19.7 g ethanol

Illustrative conversion: grams of ethanol ÷ 8 g/h. It does not include absorption or body parameters and is not identical to the main calculator model. The result is not a predictor of sobriety or a basis for driving.

What does the degradation time depend on?

The amount of ethanol is also determined by individual metabolism and the course of absorption. A larger glass of wine can contain a similar amount of alcohol as a large beer.

Can alcohol stay in the blood for the next day?

Yes, the model can still show a non-zero level the next morning with a larger amount. The actual course cannot be confirmed by calculation.

How to find out the exact time of sobriety?

The amount of drinks alone is not enough to reliably determine the exact time. The Internet model does not replace measurement.

The data are expressed in grams per litre of blood (g/l). They are not automatically the same as blood alcohol concentration by mass (‰) and this directory does not compare the legal limit with your calculator result. The legal limit does not mean a safe level for driving. Other exclusions and stricter conditions may apply; before traveling, check the current rules of a specific country.

Is the same limit applicable throughout the European Union?

No. Rules vary by country and driver category. The overview covers a verified selection from several continents. It is not a complete database of all states or legal advice.

Detailed overview of limits in the world
Understand the result

An estimate that has its limits.

The calculator is an information tool. Neither the result nor the time to zero is a measure or confirmation of fitness to drive.

How does the alcohol calculator work?

Takes into account the amount and alcohol content of the drinks, the weight and the specified drinking range. It spreads the drinks evenly between the start and finish and calculates one total alcohol level.

You will get an estimate of the blood alcohol concentration (‰) and the approximate time to 0.00 ‰ according to the model. This calculation does not measure individual absorption or metabolism.

Calculation details

How long does alcohol take to break down?

Alcohol is metabolized mainly in the liver. Speed and course are individual; both genetic differences and nutrition can affect metabolism.

The calculator uses a fixed value of 0.15‰ per hour. It's an assumption of the tool, not the measured speed of your body.

Degradation of alcohol

What affects blood alcohol levels?

In this model, the amount of ethanol, mass, distribution coefficient and time are decisive. Body composition, absorption, and health or metabolic differences also affect the actual course.

What is residual alcohol

Alcohol in individual drinks

Compare the amount of pure ethanol, not just the size of the glass. The same volume of beer, wine and spirits contains different amounts of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

Is the alcohol calculator accurate?

No. It provides a mathematical estimate based on the entered data and a simplified model. Actual level may vary.

What data do I need for the calculation?

Select gender for model, weight, start and end of drinking and add drinks with volume and number. Drinks are evenly distributed within the specified range.

How much blood alcohol concentration (‰) does one beer cause?

One universal value does not exist. It depends on volume, percentage of alcohol, body parameters, time and individual differences.

Can I drive according to the result of the calculator?

No. The calculator does not measure alcohol and does not confirm the ability to drive. Even a result of 0.00 ‰ is not proof of sobriety.

What is residual alcohol?

Alcohol that can remain in the body after drinking, even the next morning. Elapsed time or feeling of sobriety alone is not a measurement.

What does 0.00 ‰ mean in a calculator?

The model used estimates a zero level; the data is also rounded to two decimal places. It is not a confirmation that there is no alcohol in the body.

How does the multi-drink calculation work?

Amounts of ethanol are added to one common level. The model breaks down this level, not each drink separately.

Why does the result change over time?

The model uses the current time. The result and graph are recalculated every minute according to absorption and elimination assumptions.

Calculation methodology

Weight of ethanol: volume (ml) × alcohol (%) / 100 × 0.789. Model dose in blood alcohol concentration (‰): ethanol (g) / (weight (kg) × r).

The r coefficient is 0.68 for the male model and 0.55 for the female model. Each drink is divided into 60 time doses and each is absorbed for 45 minutes. Demolition of the common level is 0.15 ‰/h. The level does not drop below zero.

Concentrations in the catalog and cocktail recipes are indicative. The model does not take into account food, drugs, diseases or individual body composition. The green mark only means a model return to zero.
