How much alcohol is in beer?
The amount of ethanol in beer depends on the serving size and its alcohol by volume (ABV). A beer style alone does not tell you its exact alcohol content.
Example serving sizes
At 5% ABV, a 330 ml beer contains about 13.0 g of ethanol, while a 500 ml beer contains about 19.7 g. Two 500 ml beers contain about 39.5 g in total.
Beer strength labels are not ABV
Use the alcohol by volume (ABV) printed on the label. A beer’s degree rating is not the same as its alcohol by volume.
One beer does not produce the same blood alcohol level for everyone
You can calculate the grams of ethanol in a drink directly. Estimating blood alcohol also requires personal details and timing, and the actual result varies from person to person.
Example serving sizes
| Volume (ml) | Alcohol (%) | Ethanol | Calculator |
|---|---|---|---|
| 330 ml | 5 % | 13,0 g | Calculator |
| 500 ml | 5 % | 19,7 g | Calculator |
| 500 ml | 8 % | 31,6 g | Calculator |
| 1000 ml | 5 % | 39,5 g | Calculator |
ml × ABV / 100 × 0,789 = g
