How long does it take for the body to metabolize alcohol?
You cannot estimate how long alcohol stays in your system from the number of drinks alone. The amount of ethanol consumed and each person’s metabolism both matter.
How long does it take for the body to metabolize alcohol?
Compare typical servings and the amount of pure ethanol they contain. The 8 g/hour calculation is illustrative; it does not predict how long an individual will take to sober up.
Illustrative calculation: grams of ethanol ÷ 8 g/h. It does not account for absorption or body measurements and differs from the main calculator model. It does not predict when you will be sober and must not be used to decide whether to drive.
What affects how quickly the body processes alcohol?
The amount of ethanol is also determined by individual metabolism and the course of absorption. A larger glass of wine can contain a similar amount of alcohol as a large beer.
Can alcohol stay in the blood for the next day?
Yes, the model can still show a non-zero level the next morning with a larger amount. The actual course cannot be confirmed by calculation.
Can I calculate exactly when I'll be sober?
The number of drinks alone is not enough to determine an exact time reliably. This online model is not a substitute for a measurement.
Illustrative value source: NHS – alcohol units. The NHS cites an average of about 8 g per hour for adults, though rates vary from person to person.
How long does it take for the body to metabolize alcohol? How the body processes alcohol
Most ethanol is metabolised in the liver. Enzymes convert it first to acetaldehyde and then to acetate. Genetic and environmental factors can affect this process.
What AlcoCalc assumes
The model subtracts 0.15‰ per hour from one shared estimated level. This fixed assumption does not vary by person and does not measure your metabolism.
Example: time to zero
If the modelled level were 0.60‰ after absorption, subtracting 0.15‰ per hour would bring it to zero in four hours. This illustrates the model’s assumption; it is not advice on when it is safe to drive.
Why the estimate may differ from reality
The model does not account for individual absorption, body composition, health conditions or medication. Its countdown cannot confirm that you are sober.
